Coconut Oil Pulling: An Ancient Ayurvedic Practice
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic Indian folk remedy claimed to whiten teeth, freshen breath, and significantly improve oral health. Oil pulling can be performed with any edible oil, but I recommend coconut because of its neutral flavor and natural whitening properties.
Coconut oil pulling…
Eliminates bad breath
Heals gum inflammation and gingivitis
Prevents cavities and gum disease
Prevents dry mouth
The way oil pulling works is simple — when you swish the oil around your mouth, the bacteria get swept away and dissolve in the liquid oil.
To try oil pulling:
Put about 1 tbsp of coconut oil in your mouth
Swish the oil around your mouth for about 15–20 minutes
Spit out the oil, then brush your teeth with baking soda before rinsing enhance the whitening effects.
Follow up with brushing with toothpaste or rinsing with mouthwash.
Some people recommend oil pulling on an empty stomach before brushing their teeth. Many do it while showering or bathing in the morning. But you can do it anytime.
If you do not have 15-20 minutes, even 5-10 minutes can improve your oral hygiene.
Add a drop or two of Tea Tree Essential Oil for its anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties.
Grapefruit essential oil also provides an antimicrobial effect and a fresh and invigorating taste to the oil-pulling experience.
Remember to always dilute essential oils. A couple drops go a long way for oil pulling.
